How it works

How the Typing Course Works

Each lesson adds a few new keys and drills them together with the keys you already know. Drills only ever use keys you have been taught, so you are never asked to reach for a key you haven’t met.

  • The keyboard guide under the text lights up the next key, coloured by the finger that should press it. When a capital or symbol needs Shift, the correct Shift key lights up too.
  • Wrong keys turn the letter red and lower your accuracy. The lesson waits until you press the right key, so there is no Backspace to worry about.
  • Stars: one star for finishing with 90% accuracy, two for 94% and three quarters of the lesson’s speed goal, three for 96% at the full goal. Goals rise from 8 WPM on the home row to 35 WPM in the final test.
  • Your progress is saved in this browser. Come back on the same device and the “Continue” button takes you to your next lesson.
Finger positions

Where to Put Your Fingers

ASDF;LKJSpace
Home row position: left fingers on A S D F, right fingers on J K L ;, thumbs on the space bar. Each colour matches that finger’s keys on the course keyboard.

Touch typing starts from the home row. Your left fingers rest on A, S, D and F, your right fingers on J, K, L and the semicolon, and your thumbs on the space bar. The small bumps on F and J let you find the position without looking. Every other key is a short reach from there, and each finger always returns home.

For capitals, hold Shift with the little finger of the other hand: left Shift for J, K, L and the rest of the right-hand letters, right Shift for A, S, D and the rest of the left-hand letters. Lessons 19 and 20 drill exactly this.

Practice plan

How to Practise for the Best Results

  • Short and daily beats long and rare. 20 to 30 minutes every day builds the finger memory faster than a two-hour session once a week.
  • Accuracy first. If a lesson shows under 94% accuracy, slow down and repeat it. Speed comes on its own once your fingers stop guessing.
  • Never look down. Glancing at your hands feels faster today and caps your speed for good. Use the keyboard guide on screen instead.
  • Repeat earlier lessons. Start each session by repeating one lesson you’ve already passed, then take a new one.

For a day-by-day schedule once you finish, see how to reach 35 WPM in 30 days, and for cutting mistakes, the guide on improving typing accuracy.

After the course

From the Course to Your Typing Exam

The course builds the skill. Government typing tests then check it against a fixed speed and their own mistake rules, so finish with practice in the exam’s format:

Exam figures change between recruitment cycles, so confirm yours in the current notification. The keyboard used in the SSC typing test is the same standard layout this course teaches.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. All 30 lessons are free and need no sign-up. Your progress and stars are saved in your own browser, so use the same browser to continue where you left off.

It depends on how often you practise. Each lesson takes a few minutes, so 20 to 30 minutes a day is enough for one or two new lessons plus a repeat of an older one. Plan for a few weeks to finish all 30, and keep practising after that to reach exam speed comfortably.

SSC CHSL asks for 35 WPM in English, the RRB NTPC typist posts 30 WPM, and the SSC CGL DEST about 27 WPM (2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes). The final lesson of this course needs 35 WPM at 96% accuracy for 3 stars.

The letter turns red and your accuracy drops, but the lesson waits for the right key, so you never need Backspace. The exam tests on this site work differently: there, mistakes stay in your text and are scored the way the exam scores them.

The lessons accept a phone keyboard, but touch typing is a computer-keyboard skill and government typing tests are taken on a computer. Use a laptop or desktop keyboard whenever you can.

Not yet. This course teaches English touch typing on the standard QWERTY keyboard. For Hindi, practise with the Hindi typing test, and see the Kruti Dev keyboard layout if your exam uses Kruti Dev.
