What KDPH Means (Full Form)
KDPH stands for Key Depressions Per Hour. A "key depression" is a single keystroke — every letter, every space, every punctuation mark, and the Shift you hold for a capital all count as one depression each. So KDPH is simply how many keys you press in an hour of typing, and it's the unit SSC CGL's DEST states its requirement in.
The reason you usually see it written over 15 minutes rather than a full hour is that the actual test is 15 minutes long. 8,000 key depressions per hour is the same speed as 2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes — one is just the hourly rate, the other is what you'd actually type in the exam window.
The KDPH to WPM Formula
Converting between KDPH and words per minute uses one fixed convention: 5 key depressions = 1 word. That's the standard average English word length including the space after it. From there:
WPM = (KDPH ÷ 5) ÷ 60
KDPH = WPM × 5 × 60

What "N Key Depressions in 15 Minutes" Means
This is the phrasing that confuses people most, so here it is plainly. A requirement of "2,000 key depressions in 15 minutes" means you need to press 2,000 keys — letters, spaces and punctuation combined — in a quarter of an hour. Divide by 5 to get words (400), divide by 15 to get words per minute (about 27).
The same logic scales to any figure. "600 key depressions in 15 minutes" is 120 words, roughly 8 WPM — a slow warm-up pace, not an exam standard. "1,000 key depressions in 15 minutes" is about 13 WPM. The number sounds large because it's counting keystrokes, but the underlying speed is often modest.
Why Exams Use KDPH Instead of WPM
A "word" isn't a stable unit. A and administrative are both one word, but one is a single keystroke and the other is fourteen. For a data-entry role — mostly names, numbers, codes and addresses — counting words would let two candidates with very different real output score identically.
Key depressions don't have that flaw. Every keystroke counts once, so KDPH measures the physical work of data entry directly, which is exactly what the job is. WPM is the friendlier number to quote; KDPH is the one that survives contact with a real dataset. That's also why "~27 WPM sounds easy" is a trap: that figure assumes average-length words, and a passage full of numbers, capitals and punctuation costs more depressions per word than the conversion assumes — so your effective WPM drops even while your fingers move at the same speed.
Hitting the Number Isn't the Whole Test
A KDPH target is one of two conditions, not the finish line. You also have to stay inside your category's permissible error percentage on the same attempt — clear 8,000 KDPH with too many mistakes and it's still a fail.
