SSC CGL 2026 guide

SSC CGL eligibility 2026

A complete eligibility checklist covering the conditions shared by all posts and the specialist rules that candidates often overlook.

Direct answer

For most SSC CGL 2026 posts, candidates need a bachelor's degree from a recognised university or equivalent by 1 August 2026 and must satisfy nationality and post-wise age conditions. JSO, Statistical Investigator and State Cadre audit/accounts posts have additional qualification requirements.

SSC CGL eligibility checklist

  • Meet the nationality or citizenship condition in the notice.
  • Possess the required degree by 1 August 2026.
  • Fit the age band for every selected post after valid relaxation.
  • Meet specialist subject, marks or language requirements where applicable.
  • Meet physical and medical standards for specified posts.
  • Produce original supporting documents when required.

Eligibility is checked post by post. A candidate may be eligible for one CGL post and ineligible for another.

Nationality and citizenship requirements

The 2026 notice permits a citizen of India, a subject of Nepal, a subject of Bhutan, or specified persons of Indian origin who migrated from named countries with the intention of permanently settling in India. Candidates in categories requiring a Government of India eligibility certificate may sit the examination, but appointment is subject to that certificate.

The notice also says only male candidates are eligible for vacancies, if any, reported in the Border Roads Organisation.

Educational qualification for most posts

For all other posts not covered by a specialist rule, the essential qualification is a bachelor's degree from a recognised university or equivalent. Final-year candidates may apply, but the result of the required qualification must be declared by 1 August 2026. Merely having a university process the result by that date is not enough.

Candidates using an Open and Distance Learning qualification should verify that the programme and institution were recognised for the relevant period and keep the required proof for document verification.

Post-specific educational qualifications

PostAdditional requirement
Junior Statistical OfficerBachelor's degree plus at least 60% in Mathematics at Class 12, or Statistics as a degree-level subject
Statistical Investigator Grade IIBachelor's degree in one of the specified statistics, mathematics, economics, demography, operations research, IT/computing, data science or AI disciplines
State Cadre Assistant Audit/Accounts OfficerBachelor's degree plus proficiency and certificate in the state's regional/official language at matriculation level
Central Cadre Assistant Audit OfficerBachelor's degree; finance/accounting qualifications listed as desirable, not the basic essential degree

Age eligibility is post-specific

The normal age bands are 18-27, 20-30, 18-30 and 18-32 years as on 1 August 2026. SC/ST, OBC, PwBD, eligible Ex-Servicemen and other specified categories may receive relaxation under the notice.

Use the dedicated age-limit table for date-of-birth ranges and relaxation codes. Do not assume a category certificate solves a mismatch with the lower-age boundary or another post requirement.

Documents candidates should prepare

  • Matriculation certificate for date of birth.
  • Degree, provisional certificate and semester/year mark sheets.
  • Category, EWS, PwBD or ESM certificates in the prescribed form where claimed.
  • Regional-language proficiency certificate for applicable State Cadre posts.
  • Any post-specific or physical-standard documents requested by SSC or the user department.

False or unsupported claims can cancel candidature even after good exam performance. Check eligibility before arranging post preferences.
