SSC CGL 2026 selection begins with Tier 1 category-wise shortlisting for Tier 2. Final merit is based on the applicable Tier 2 performance, subject to qualifying Computer Knowledge, DEST and any specialist paper requirements. Candidates must submit post preferences, satisfy document and post-specific standards, and complete the notified verification/allotment process. There is no interview stage.
Selection process at a glance
- Apply for the examination and meet provisional eligibility checks.
- Take Tier 1 and clear the category/post-group shortlisting cut-off.
- Take the applicable Tier 2 papers and qualify every required Paper I section.
- Submit the online post and department preference form.
- Complete document and identity/verification steps notified by SSC.
- Receive allocation based on merit, eligibility, vacancies and preferences.
- Complete post-specific physical, medical or departmental checks where applicable.
Stage 1: Tier 1 shortlisting
Tier 1 is used to shortlist candidates category-wise for Tier 2. SSC fixes separate cut-offs for the JSO/Statistical Investigator group, the Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer group and all other posts. Meeting the published minimum qualifying percentage does not guarantee shortlisting because the competitive cut-off can be higher.
Use the Tier 1 syllabus and marking scheme to calculate realistic mock scores.
Stage 2: Tier 2 and qualifying modules
All Tier 1-qualified candidates take Tier 2 Paper I and must qualify every section. Paper II applies to JSO and Statistical Investigator candidates. Paper III applies to Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer candidates. Computer Knowledge and DEST are qualifying, but higher standards apply to selected posts.
The final merit basis differs by post group. For most posts, aggregate performance in Sections I and II of Paper I drives merit after qualifying Sections III and IV. See the complete Tier 2 pattern.
Stage 3: Post preference form
SSC takes post and department preferences online before the result/allocation stage. The 2026 notice states that candidates who do not submit preferences within the stipulated time will not be considered for a post, and options are treated as final.
List only posts for which age, education, physical and medical conditions are satisfied. If a candidate receives a preferred post but later fails its post-specific standard, the notice warns that the candidate may not be shifted to another post.
Stage 4: Documents and verification
User departments conduct Document Verification under the notified process. Candidates should be ready with original proof of date of birth, graduation, category, reservation or relaxation, and any post-specific condition. SSC or the user department may also require identity verification and other documents listed in the admission certificate.
The application is provisional until eligibility is confirmed. Good marks cannot repair an unsupported qualification or category claim.
How final merit and allotment work
The notice states that final selection is based on Tier 2 performance and post preferences, subject to the applicable paper and qualifying-module rules. Once the first available preference is allotted according to merit, the candidate is not considered for lower options.
Vacancies also limit allotment. The 2026 notice initially reported approximately 12,256 tentative vacancies and said updated post-wise/category-wise vacancies would be published separately. Treat vacancy counts as dated information.
Selection mistakes to avoid
- Treating Tier 1 as the final-merit exam.
- Ignoring CKT or DEST because they are qualifying.
- Missing the post-preference window.
- Ranking posts without checking physical or educational requirements.
- Using expired category or eligibility assumptions.
- Failing to save and organise original documents.
