Is the SSC CGL typing test compulsory for all posts?
Yes. The 2026 SSC CGL notice states that the Data Entry Speed Test is mandatory for all posts and qualifying in nature. Some posts use a higher DEST standard, and only limited candidates may qualify for an exemption.
Under the 2026 notice, there is no general list of SSC CGL posts without DEST. Paragraph 13.9.10.3 says DEST is mandatory for all posts. The test is qualifying, which means its marks are not added like the scored sections, but candidates still have to clear the applicable standard unless they meet a permitted exemption.
Standard rule
About 2,000 key depressions in a 15-minute DEST window.
All posts
DEST is mandatory and qualifying for all SSC CGL posts.
Higher standard
Specified posts require a higher DEST standard decided by SSC.
The notice identifies posts where DEST or computer proficiency is specifically prescribed. Examples include Tax Assistant in CBIC, Tax Assistant in CBDT, and UDC/SSA in the Central Bureau of Narcotics. Higher DEST standards also apply to computer-proficiency posts described in paragraph 13.9.9.
Those examples include specified Assistant Section Officer and Assistant posts, CBIC inspector roles, Executive Assistant in CBIC, and Postal Assistant/Sorting Assistant. The notice uses “etc.” and SSC decides the applicable higher standard, so candidates should verify the exact post and cycle instead of relying on an unofficial fixed list.
Who may be exempt from SSC CGL DEST?
The 2026 notice describes a limited exemption for eligible PwBD-OH candidates who submit the prescribed medical certificate declaring them permanently unfit for the typing test. The exemption is not available for most posts where computer proficiency or DEST is specifically prescribed, although the notice states an exception for Tax Assistant in CBDT.
Other PwBD candidates are not generally exempt. Eligible PwBD/PwD candidates using a scribe receive five additional minutes, and the notice contains further conditions. Read paragraphs 13.9.10.6 and 13.9.10.7 before making an eligibility decision.
What should you prepare if your preferred post is not final?
Prepare for DEST even if you have not selected a final post preference.
Use 15-minute paragraph tests so your practice matches the official time window.
Build a margin above the basic 2,000-key-depression benchmark.
Check the higher-standard paragraphs in the notice before submitting post preferences.
