The SSC CGL 2026 national notice does not name a keyboard brand, model or key-travel specification. It says detailed Skill Test instructions will be provided by Regional Offices and DEST will be conducted in the manner decided by the Commission. Practise on a physical desktop keyboard when possible, but do not expect a guaranteed brand.
What the official notice actually says
Paragraph 13.9.10.2 defines the duration and approximate passage length, then directs candidates to Regional Office instructions for Skill Test details. Paragraph 13.9.10.5 leaves the method of conducting DEST to the Commission. Neither paragraph lists Dell, HP, Lenovo, a mechanical keyboard, or any other guaranteed hardware.
This distinction matters because many preparation pages turn common centre equipment into an official specification. It is safer to prepare for ordinary variation than to memorise an unsupported brand claim.
Should you practise on a desktop or laptop keyboard?
A desktop keyboard is useful because it exposes you to larger key spacing and more travel than many thin laptops. A laptop is still usable for daily skill work. The important goal is not to become dependent on one exact resistance, sound or key shape.
- Use a desktop keyboard for at least some full mocks.
- Keep the keyboard flat or only slightly raised.
- Avoid switching to an unfamiliar layout immediately before a benchmark.
- Practise numbers, capitals and punctuation on the same physical setup used for paragraphs.
A 12-minute keyboard adaptation drill
| Minutes | Drill |
|---|---|
| 0–2 | Type slowly and notice spacing, backspace position and key resistance. |
| 2–5 | Copy a simple paragraph without looking down. |
| 5–8 | Use a passage with capitals, commas and numbers. |
| 8–12 | Type at normal practice pace and review only repeated errors. |
What to check before the timer begins
Follow the centre and Regional Office instructions first. If a demonstration or familiarisation period is provided, use it to locate correction and navigation keys, test comfortable hand placement, and confirm that the keyboard responds normally. Report a genuine hardware problem through the permitted invigilator process rather than silently compensating for a faulty key.
Train the skill, not the sound of one keyboard
Strong preparation survives small hardware differences. If changing keyboards reduces performance dramatically, add one alternate-keyboard session each week. Keep the passage easy during the first adaptation session so the new movement can settle without a speed contest.
Common questions about keyboard guide
Can I prepare for SSC CGL typing on a laptop keyboard?
Yes. A laptop can build reading rhythm and key familiarity. Add some desktop-keyboard sessions before full mocks so a change in spacing and key travel is less disruptive.
Is a mechanical keyboard required for DEST?
No mechanical-keyboard requirement appears in the national CGL notice. Practise on reliable equipment, but do not turn a personal keyboard preference into an official rule.
Can I carry my own keyboard to the exam centre?
Do not assume personal equipment is permitted. Follow the admission certificate, Regional Office and centre instructions. The preparation goal is to adapt to the authorised setup provided for the test.
